Captain America: Brave New World – Movie Review

“Captain America: Brave New World” revitalizes the franchise with an exhilarating blend of action, character development, and poignant storytelling. As the latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it takes significant strides to explore new themes while honoring the legacy of the iconic superhero.

Plot Summary

Set in a world still grappling with the aftermath of the blip, the film follows Sam Wilson, aka Captain America, as he navigates his new responsibilities. The story begins with Wilson striving to uphold the ideals of justice and freedom while confronting a formidable new adversary. Tension builds as he battles not only external threats but also his inner doubts about fitting into the legendary shield holders shoes.

Character Development

Anthony Mackie’s performance as Sam Wilson truly shines. He brings depth to a character that is both relatable and aspirational. The film effectively explores his inner conflict, showcasing his journey to embrace his role fully. The supporting cast, including familiar faces like Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) and several new characters, adds layers to the narrative, presenting various perspectives on heroism and legacy.

We are shown a new side of General “Thunderbolt” Ross who has now become president of United States as he tries to come to grips with the evil he has done with becoming the President of the United States trying to bring peace to a world in turmoil. He has lost his relationship with his daughter Betty Ross due to his persecution of the Hulk/Bruce Banner and his personal motivations. As the movie develops we find that Ross has also been keeping an individual known as The Leader who is a creation of gamma radiation, as a prisoner to help create a cure for his heart ailment along with developing advanced weaponry.

The Leader was introduced to us in the Hulk standalone movie where he known as mr Blue or Dr Samuel Sterns. At the end of the movie he is infected with the Hulks blood which causes him to develop an incredible intelligence. During this movie we find that Ross while using Sterns kept bombarding him with gamma radiation that left him horribly disfigured and with the ability to take raw data an turn it into an almost precognitive ability to predict the future of both groups and individuals, Ross had promised Sterns that he would let him go but never did, so he developed a plan where he gave Ross pills laced with gamma poisoning for his heart ailment but in secret the pills were building in Ross’s system and Sterns was arranging to trigger an event that would raise his stress level and unleash the Red Hulk from within Ross. This new Hulk was stronger than our familiar green one and can unleash flames.

During an epic scene we see Captain America and the new Falcon trying to prevent what could become WWIII. We have a fleet of warships from Japan and the US facing off in the Indian ocean fighting for control of the Celestial known as Tiamut which has a new element within it known as Adamantium which could surpass Vibranium in usefulness. Sam has his doubts abut his young sidekick Danny Ramirez’s abilities and safety filling in as the new Falcon. Tragically during this sequence his fears are realized and Danny is severely injured requiring emergency surgery. While in the hospital Sam is met by Bucky Barnes who is now running for the US Congress. Sam begins to doubt that he is not worthy to follow in Steve Rogers legacy because he is just a man with no super powers since he didn’t take the super soldier serum. Bucky helps lift his spirits by telling him Cap chose him because he was a good man with strong principles (where have we heard this before) not because he had any special powers and he has always been the right man for the job.

Although his plans are thwarted unknowingly by Sam several times, Stern is able to cause Ross to exceed the stress point and during a televised international peace treaty event in the presidential rose garden the Red Hulk is unleashed on the world, destroying a large part of the White House and wreaking havoc on the city. Captain America is now pitted against this beast wishing he had taken the super soldier serum, thinking back to his talk with Bucky. Using his powers of reasoning, indomitable will and his Wakandan suit he is able to talk Red Hulk out of his rage state turning him back into Ross.

In the end we see Ross in the Raft as a prisoner talking with Ross as Betty comes in to help fill the hole in his soul and helping to possibly redeem the ex-president. This is not the only ending we get though as Cap visits the Leader who informs him he has seen the future and something is coming across worlds that will test the mettle of our heroes very soon (multiversal war, DR Doom or maybe World War Hulk).

Action and Visual Effects

Visually, “Brave New World” is a spectacle. The action sequences are masterfully choreographed, featuring stunning effects that push the boundaries of the superhero genre. Each scene is packed with adrenaline, yet they serve to enhance the story rather than overshadow it, maintaining a balance between spectacle and substance.

I will admit some of the scenes seemed unfinished or kludgy especially at the beginning of the movie when Cap does his super hero landing as he prepares to do battle with the serpent society, It just seemed to lack smoothness or much polish to it but overall most of the scenes hit ther mark.

Themes

The film dives into themes of legacy, belonging, and resilience. It thoughtfully addresses the challenges Sam faces as a black Captain America, making a powerful statement about representation and the evolving meaning of heroism in contemporary society. The narrative encourages viewers to reflect on what it truly means to be a hero and how history shapes our identities.

Conclusion

“Captain America: Brave New World” successfully reinvigorates the beloved series, blending emotional depth with thrilling action. It engages both long-time fans and newcomers by providing an insightful exploration of heroism’s complexities. With strong performances, a compelling storyline, and high production values, this film stands as a triumphant addition to the MCU but is clearly a bridge type movie that you get in the middle of trilogies. We get more questions than answers but we do get to see what happened between the original Hulk movie and now, so those story threads can bring us either to the next Avengers movie or World War Hulk. Yes I said it, is it possible they will reform the Avengers to battle the Hulks before the Doomsday movie?

The acting is well done but I feel they should’ve given Harrison Ford a better chance to establish himself in the role of Ross and the character of Sabra seemed rushed upon us. She may turn out to be a great character going forward but how did she become Ross’s go to person, where did she come from and why is her character so bland.
